My First Viking Cruise

All Aboard The Viking Star!

EVERYTHING I Learned About The Viking Experience and their Ancient Mediterranean Treasures Cruise, exploring Greece and Turkey!

by Jeffrey Guard

Thinking about taking your first Viking Cruise? There’s a lot to know before you set sail!

In this article, I’ll share my firsthand experience aboard Viking Star on the Ancient Mediterranean Treasures tour. In December 2024, we explored the breathtaking Greek Isles and the historic Turkish coast, visiting remarkable archaeological sites and uncovering ancient wonders.

Along the way, I gained valuable insights about Viking Cruises—insights that every first-time cruiser should know! (This is an honest review of my experience, and not a paid advertisement)

The Viking Star Ancient Mediterranean Treasures Itinerary:

  • Monday-December 16, 2024: Embarkation-Athens, Greece
  • Tuesday-December 17, 2024: Athens, Greece
  • Wednesday-December 18, 2024: Crete (Heraklion), Greece
  • Thursday-December 19, 2024: Rhodes, Greece
  • Friday-December 20,2024: Ephesus (Kusadasi), Turkey
  • Saturday-December 21,2024: Troy (Canakkale), Turkey
  • Sunday-December 22, 2024: Istanbul, Turkey
  • Monday-December 23,2024: Disembarkation-Istanbul, Turkey
The cruise route the Viking Star took for The Ancient Mediterranean Treasures Map, started in Athens, Greece.

I’m a huge believer in full transparency and am happy to share with you what we paid.

For our cruise which departed December 16-23, 2024, we made a $50 deposit in September of 2023 and then paid off the balance in October of 2023.

We booked, well in advance, nearly 14 months before our trip. My partner and I are not retired so we needed to lock in dates and were at a big disadvantage when it comes to purchasing. We need lots of advance notice because of our work schedules.

There were numerous people on board who shared with us because we were traveling off-season, that there were good deals for this cruise. If you have a flexible schedule like many of the retirees on board you can easily snag something cheaper than what we paid.

Viking Cruise Cost Breakdown:

We paid by credit card which is slightly more expensive than paying with a check (it’s a small, nominal fee) –but the cruise price was quite high and we wanted the points that came with putting it on our American Express.

Our total bill came out to $20,526—for two passengers ($10,263/passenger) and consisted of 4 major costs: room & board, airfare, additional items, and onboard items.

Understanding Viking Cruise Pricing: Room & Board

The first major cost to consider is room and board. When booking through Viking’s website, you’ll select your preferred stateroom, and the site will provide a price quote—including any available discounts. One key detail to note: the quoted price covers two passengers, making it easier to budget for your trip.

  • Cruise Fare: $11,798 (Deluxe Veranda Room) ($5,899/passenger)
  • Cruise Discount: ($5,200) ($2,600/passenger)
  • Adjusted Cruise Fare Total: $6,598 total ($3,299/passenger)

The Viking discount also enticed us to sign up early, they gave us a very good discount of $5,200—which almost paid for one whole passenger.

Bundling Airfare with Your Viking Cruise

Viking Cruises offers the option to bundle your cruise with airfare, often at a lower cost than booking flights independently. As a bulk purchaser, Viking secures competitive rates, making this a convenient choice for travelers. One major perk we appreciated was the 24/7 emergency hotline, which provides assistance in case of flight delays or travel disruptions. Additionally, Viking arranges airport chaperones to guide you through transfers, help with connections, and escort you to hotels or the ship.

We opted for business class tickets and were surprised to find that, despite departing from New York City, our flights included connections rather than direct routes. However, our journey was smooth, and we arrived without delays or major issues.

The Viking Airfare Cost Breakdown:

  • Two RT Business Class Tickets: $10,196 ($5,098/passenger)
  • Discounts offered ($1,200)
  • Air Fare Total: $8,996 ($4,498/passenger)

Are Viking’s Airfare Bundles a Good Deal?

Based on published fares, I found Viking’s bundled airfare to be slightly more affordable than booking independently. One caveat: Viking discloses that, due to bulk ticket purchases, some fare classes may not be eligible for airline miles. However, to our surprise, we still earned miles with our preferred airline alliance! This unexpected perk made the price and connections feel like an even better bargain

Additional Costs: Extensions & Travel Insurance

The third major cost component of our Viking Cruise was optional pre- and post-cruise extensions. Our journey aboard Viking Star embarked in Athens and disembarked in Istanbul, so we opted to add three-day extensions in both cities to explore more of their rich history and culture.

Another significant expense was the Trip Mate Travel Protection Plan. Given our cruise’s $20,000 price tag and the fact that we booked 14 months in advance, we felt it was worth the investment—especially because it included a “Cancel for Any Reason” waiver. While our Platinum American Express offered some level of trip protection, we preferred the added convenience and peace of mind that came with this plan. Fortunately, we never had to use it!

  • Athens Extension: $1,198 ($599/person)
  • Istanbul Extension: $1,598 ($799/person)
  • Trip Mate Travel Protection Plan: $1,898 ($949/person)

Onboard Extras: What’s Included & What Costs Extra

The fourth cost component of our Viking Cruise was optional onboard purchases. Viking offers several add-ons, including a drinks package, spa treatments, and premium shore excursions. However, we opted to prepay our gratuities and didn’t purchase any additional packages. Fortunately, our booking already included free daily excursions, allowing us to explore each destination without extra costs.

  • Pre-Paid Gratuities: $238 ($119/passenger)

The Viking Cruise Registration Process: What to Do Before You Sail

Once you’ve booked your Viking Cruise, there are several important steps to complete before departure. Here’s a checklist to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience:

Create an Account on My Viking Journey

If you haven’t already, this should be your first step. The My Viking Journey portal stores all your Viking transactions, including receipts, cruise itineraries, and important details. If you booked for your entire travel party, only one person must register—all bookings will be linked to that account.

Whitelist Viking’s Emails

Be sure to adjust your email filters to accept emails from Viking. You’ll receive several important messages with the next steps, registration deadlines, and travel updates.

Complete the Guest Information Form

This form is crucial, as it allows Viking to secure your airfare and finalize your registration. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months AFTER your return date, per Viking’s current policy.

Stay on Top of Registration Start Times & Deadlines

Viking will send notifications about when registration opens for shore excursions, onboard dining, and other reservations. Keep in mind:

  • Guests in larger staterooms get priority access to book.
  • Dining reservations fill up quickly, so register as soon as your time slot opens.
  • Don’t miss deadlines, such as the Comfort Check-In process, which Viking will notify you about one month before departure.

Manage Your Airfare

If you purchased Viking’s airfare bundle, link your reservation to the airline’s app for easy access to check-in, seat selection, and flight updates. Be sure to check in online 24 hours before departure.

Print & Review Your Important Documents

About a month before your trip, download and print:

  • “Your Journey Summary” – Includes your airfare itinerary, confirmed excursions, dining reservations, and essential trip details. Review everything carefully and contact Viking immediately if anything is incorrect.
  • Travel Protection Plan (if purchased) – Print out the policy details in case you need to file a claim.
🚨 Important: Your Journey Summary includes your Booking Number, which could allow someone to modify your itinerary—keep it secure!

Look Out for Your Viking “Goody Package”

A week before departure, Viking sends a welcome package that includes:

  • Two red leather luggage tags
  • Two embarkation tags per guest (required during check-in)
  • Two red stickers to help Viking staff identify you at the airport

Air Travel to the Ship: A Smooth Journey with Viking’s Support

Despite flying from Newark Liberty Airport, a major global hub, we had a connection–which worried me, given that it was the start of winter. (Photo credit: Jeffrey Guard)

I won’t lie—I was nervous about the travel logistics. Our itinerary had us flying from Newark Liberty (NYC) to Frankfurt Airport, with a connection from Frankfurt to Athens. Since it was December, I kept wondering: Would we make our connection on time?

We flew Lufthansa Business Class (Star Alliance), and the check-in process at Newark was smooth. The business class lounge was decent—if you’re curious about that experience, check out my detailed video review.

Flight Experience & Frankfurt Airport Connection

While I wasn’t thrilled with Lufthansa’s 2-2-2 wide-body business class configuration, the flight was comfortable and arrived on time. Frankfurt Airport is huge, and although the Lufthansa App estimated a 10-minute walk to our next gate, it was actually closer to 20 minutes—and we’re not slow walkers!

A Surprise Viking Touch at Frankfurt Airport

As we walked toward our connection, we got an unexpected but reassuring surprise: a Viking representative in a red vest near our arrival gate! He introduced himself, checked our names off a list, and confirmed where we needed to go for our next flight. Even though we had figured out the route, this personal touch made us feel looked after. He also reminded us that we needed to clear immigration before reaching our connecting gate.

The non-European immigration line looked long, but it moved quickly—we cleared it in under 10 minutes with plenty of time to spare.

Lounge & Flight to Athens

We waited for our flight in the Lufthansa Senator’s Lounge, which was okay but crowded. Oddly, the airport felt unbearably hot, like someone had cranked the thermostat to 86°F! Thankfully, we were able to charge our devices before boarding our connection to Athens.

Arrival in Athens: The Viking Welcome Experience

Viking Cruise Airport Transfers were easy and done with style in either a nice bus or luxury van. The staff were also extremely helpful in answering any questions and offering suggestions on what to do and see for extensions. (Photo credit: Jeffrey Guard)

Upon landing, we collected our luggage (which took a while to arrive) and breezed through customs—which was practically nonexistent. The moment we stepped into the arrivals hall, we spotted Viking’s welcoming committee with large, impossible-to-miss signs.

The Viking team checked us in, directed us to a waiting area, and as more passengers arrived, we all boarded a large bus to our hotel. Since we had purchased the Athens Extension Package, this meant we could enjoy a few extra days in Athens before embarkation.

What I Liked & Didn’t Like About the Viking Star Experience

Viking Cruise’s Famous Red Welcome Tent. It has baskets of bottled water, fresh fruit and a red carpet as you board! (Photo credit: Jeffrey Guard)

Embarkation

What I Liked

The embarkation process was fast, efficient, and nearly flawless. One of the first things that stood out was Viking’s private check-in area, separate from the long lines of passengers from other cruise ships. This exclusive touch immediately made the experience feel more luxurious.

Viking also set up a red carpet welcome tent, complete with bottled water and fresh fruit, which added to the premium feel. The hospitality continued onboard, where the crew greeted us with refreshing wet towels and additional water—a thoughtful touch after traveling.

The required safety training was another highlight—it was brief, to the point, and over in under 10 minutes, freeing us up to explore the ship.

Another pleasant surprise? Early room access. Viking states that staterooms are typically ready by 2:00 PM, but on our embarkation day, an announcement came at 1:00 PM letting us know the rooms were ready ahead of schedule. This allowed us to settle in early and still have time to explore Athens before departure.

Since we were in the first wave of passengers to board, we also had early access to the World Café, one of the ship’s main dining venues. It was wonderful to enjoy a peaceful meal before the ship filled up.

What I Didn’t Like

Passport Confusion at Immigration
During embarkation, we were required to surrender our passports to immigration and received a numbered chit (like a coat-check tag) for retrieval later. However, the immigration official’s English was unclear, making the process confusing. I wasn’t sure if I needed to take any additional steps. We eventually got our passports back on the last day in Greek waters before crossing into Turkey, but I noticed many other passengers were also confused.

👉 Suggestion for Viking: Provide a clear, written explanation of the passport process during check-in to prevent uncertainty among guests.

Security Check & Confiscated Items
Like airport security, we had to pass through a metal detector and send our luggage through a scanner. I had a pair of scissors (part of my basic art supplies) that were confiscated without a clear explanation. I was given a receipt and told I could retrieve them later.

Unfortunately, when I tried to work with Viking Guest Services to retrieve them, I found the staff to be unhelpful and unprofessional. While I eventually got my scissors back, the experience left a sour note.

👉 Suggestion for Viking: Provide clearer guidelines on prohibited items in checked luggage before embarkation to avoid surprises at security.

Cabin & Housekeeping

What I Loved

The Deluxe Veranda Stateroom aboard the Viking Star. The rooms are nearly identical in quality and appearance to their advertisement photos. (Photo credit: Viking)

It’s rare in the travel industry for marketing photos to perfectly match reality, but with Viking, what you see is exactly what you get. Our stateroom looked just as stunning as the promotional images, down to the last detail. The room was spacious, impeccably clean, and felt brand new—from the furniture to the comfortable bed, everything was in perfect condition.

Smart Room Design & Thoughtful Details
  • Generous under-bed storage freed up closet space for a clutter-free experience.
  • The bathroom was well-designed, offering ample counter space, shelving, and cabinets for toiletries.
  • Our aft balcony view was spectacular—watching the waves created by the ship was incredibly soothing.
  • Housekeeping was exceptional, maintaining an immaculate cabin with polite and courteous service.

What Could Be Improved

Housekeepers would store cleaning carts in our hallway for long periods, even after complaining.
Housekeeping Storage in Guest Hallway

Because our room was at the very back (aft) of the ship, we shared a private hallway with one other stateroom. Unfortunately, housekeeping used this space as a storage area, leaving cleaning carts there indefinitely. This was frustrating, as it disrupted the premium feel of our accommodation and made it seem like our room was part of the housekeeping quarters.

I raised this issue multiple times with Viking staff and directly with housekeeping on Day 1, explaining that it diminished the guest experience. While they acknowledged my concerns, they continued to store carts there throughout the trip, which I found completely unacceptable for a premium cruise line. Efficiency should never come at the expense of customer experience.

Robe & Slipper Sizing Assumptions

Viking provided two robes and slippers, but one was sized for a man, and the other was a petite size for a woman. This assumption felt outdated—especially since Viking collects detailed guest information during the registration process. Not all women fit into a petite-size robe, and not all guests are male-female couples.

💡 Suggested Improvement: Viking should allow guests to select robe and slipper sizes in advance during registration. Thankfully, when I called to request a larger robe, they immediately accommodated my request.

Onboard Amenities:

The Viking Star has a unique “Snow Grotto” that is part of their Hydrotherapy Spa area which was one of my favorite experiences! (Photo credit: Viking)

Reliable WiFi for Staying Connected

The WiFi worked well for browsing, social media, and using the Viking app. I was even able to navigate Google Maps, which was a nice surprise…but there were a few minor issues.

WiFi Limitations & Unexpected Outages

While Viking’s WiFi worked well for browsing, streaming was not allowed. This wasn’t a major issue, but what did stand out was the occasional complete disconnection for hours at a time.

When I asked the staff about this, they explained that certain host countries blocked the WiFi—which seemed like an odd explanation. I would have preferred for Viking to acknowledge potential WiFi outages in the Viking Daily rather than leave passengers wondering. Fortunately, the outages were not excessive or for long periods.

Gym & Spa: A Wellness Lover’s Dream

The gym and spa were absolute highlights of the ship. Unlike many cruise gyms, this one had multiple workout areas, featuring:

  • Free weights & weight machines
  • Pilates reformer & treadmills
  • Spacious layout, much larger than most hotel gyms

After indulging in Viking’s amazing cuisine, we appreciated having a well-equipped space to stay active.

Spa: A Next-Level Hydrotherapy Experience

Viking’s Nordic-inspired spa amenities were incredible:
Sauna
Steam room
Snow grotto ❄️
Hot jacuzzi soak
Cold plunge bath 🧊
Cold bucket shower

We tried a full thermal circuit—steam room, snow room, hot jacuzzi, cold bucket shower, sauna, and cold plunge. By the end, any tension or stress had completely melted away.

Overcrowding in the Gym & Spa After Day 3

For the first couple of days, the gym and spa felt like a hidden gem. But by Day 3, word had spread, and it quickly became overrun by passengers who seemed to live there around the clock. This led to two key issues:

  1. The men’s area was not refreshed frequently enough—discarded towels were often left on the floor, and the men’s restroom needed more attention.
  2. The once peaceful hydrotherapy experience turned into a high-traffic zone, making it harder to enjoy the amenities.

Cozy, Private Lounges & Reading Spaces

The Viking Star has many wonderful places where you can congregate, relax, read, nap, or simply enjoy the ambiance!

One of the things that sets Viking apart is the abundance of quiet, beautifully designed spaces throughout the ship. Some of my favorites included:
📚 The Library (Deck 1) – A peaceful spot near the bar and salon, featuring comfortable chairs and fascinating books on history, art, culture, fashion, and more. Perfect for unwinding before dinner.
🌊 Explorer’s Lounge (Decks 7 & 8) – Often empty and quiet, with stunning ocean views.
🛋 The Lanai (Deck 7) – Featuring lounge chairs and cozy couches, perfect for relaxation.
🔥 Outdoor spaces near the heated pool (Deck 9) – A great place to enjoy the fresh sea air.

Recorded Lectures & Daily Overviews

One of Viking’s standout features was on-demand access to:
🎤 Educational lectures about the historical sites we were visiting and
🗓 Daily cruise director overviews “Port Talks”: Watching these in the comfort of our room—either before bed, or over breakfast—was incredibly convenient. The lectures, in particular, helped set the tone for each destination and provided valuable insights before we explored.

Lengthy Cruise Director Overviews

While the recorded lectures were informative, the Cruise Director’s Daily Overviews or “Port Talks” felt too long and filled with unnecessary banter. These recordings were taken from the live lectures, which meant they included side conversations and casual remarks that didn’t translate well to on-demand viewing.

💡 Suggested Improvement:

  • Start the Cruise Director video with a bullet-point slide summarizing key information.
  • This would allow passengers to quickly get the essentials without having to sit through the entire video.
  • Those who want more details could then watch the full recording or refer to the Viking Daily.

Free Self-Service Laundry

This was an unexpected luxury! The laundry room had:
Free-to-use washing machines with automatic detergent dispensing
Efficient dryers that dried clothes without overheating
Fresh-smelling laundry—not overly perfumed, just clean and crisp

Having access to free laundry onboard made packing easier, allowing us to travel lighter.

❌ Laundry Room Crowds & “Laundry Trolls”

The self-service laundry rooms were extremely popular, which sometimes made it difficult to find an open machine. Depending on your cabin location, you might have to walk a very long way to the laundry room on your floor—only to find all the machines in use.

A common frustration? “Laundry trolls”—passengers who hover in the laundry room and immediately remove clothes from machines the second a cycle ends. It’s never fun to walk in and find your freshly washed clothes scattered across a counter.

🚢 Too Many Activities, Not Enough Time!

This isn’t really a complaint about Viking, but rather a reality check: there’s simply too much to do onboard! Between performances, movies, lectures, and exercise classes, we found ourselves too busy exploring ports to take advantage of many onboard activities.

Bottom line: If you’re on a port-intensive itinerary, you might not have much downtime to fully enjoy everything Viking has to offer—but that’s a great problem to have!

The Food: A Cornucopia of Delicious Options!

The Restaurant onboard the Viking Star was our favorite spot to have dinner (Photo credit: Viking)

What We Loved

The Restaurant: A Perfect Blend of Comfort & Elegance

We primarily dined at The Restaurant, which became our favorite spot onboard. What made it special?

  • One side of the menu featured classic staples like steak, French fries, and mashed potatoes.
  • The other side highlighted regional cuisine inspired by the destinations we were visiting.
  • No reservations are required, making it easy to enjoy an elegant dining experience.
  • The atmosphere was refined yet not overly formal, with guests dressed in business casual attire.

Desserts Worth Indulging In

The crème brûlée was so good that we ordered multiple servings in a single meal—and almost daily! 🍮 No regrets!

All-You-Can-Eat Options

If a portion felt too small, we never hesitated to order another serving. Viking truly embraces a no-limit dining experience.

Afternoon Tea at Wintergarden: A Delightful Ritual

The tea service at Wintergarden was another standout experience. We loved:
✔ The freshly baked scones and delicate finger sandwiches
✔ The soothing ambiance, with soft afternoon light filtering through the frosted glass panels
✔ The perfect mid-afternoon break after a long day of exploring the ports

24-Hour Room Service for Breakfast

Room service was a huge time-saver—we pre-ordered breakfast, selected a specific delivery time, and enjoyed our meal while getting ready for the day. A fantastic perk!

Plenty of Dining Options

With seven different dining venues, Viking offers something for everyone—from casual to formal, exotic to familiar. Even though we didn’t dine at every restaurant, we appreciated having so many choices.

What Could Be Improved

Buffet Hygiene at World Café

While World Café had the widest food selection, it was buffet-style, which came with some downsides:

  • I noticed some guests using their hands instead of utensils.
  • Elderly passengers struggled with tongs, making food handling less sanitary.
  • We limited our visits after seeing multiple hygiene issues.

💡 Suggested Improvement: More staff monitoring to ensure proper food handling.

Reservation Glitch at Manfredi’s & Chef’s Table

We had confirmed reservations at Manfredi’s and Chef’s Table, printed on our Viking documents. However, when we arrived, they had no record of our booking.

  • This glitch affected multiple passengers.
  • The host was visibly flustered, making the experience awkward.
  • They reluctantly accommodated us after we showed proof of our reservation.

This was a major disappointment—if Viking requires advanced reservations, their system needs to reliably retain those bookings.

Poor Service at Pool Grill & Wintergarden Tea

  • At Pool Grill, we watched as everyone around us was served by waitstaff—except us. Despite making eye contact, the waiter ignored us, and we had to go to the bar ourselves to get drinks.
  • During afternoon tea at Wintergarden, service became spotty when the area got busy. We had to approach staff just to be attended to.

We reported both issues to management, and to their credit, service improved noticeably afterward—we never had another problem.

Viking Offshore Excursions: A Mix of Insider Access & Crowded Moments

Viking Offshore Excursions are included in your package and are definitely worth doing! (Photo credit: Jeffrey Guard)

✅ What We Loved

Expert Local Guides for a Deeper Experience

One of the best parts of Viking’s offshore excursions was the access to knowledgeable local guides. Their native understanding of history and culture added an authentic, insider perspective that made each site more meaningful.

Expedited Museum & Site Access

Many of the museums and archaeological sites we visited were large and overwhelming, but Viking’s guides made it easier by:
Skipping long entry lines
Highlighting key artifacts and exhibits
Providing digestible, big-picture insights

This helped us focus on the most important aspects without feeling lost.

Flexibility to Explore at Your Own Pace

A great perk was the option to break away from the tour and explore on our own. If we wanted more time at a museum, we simply informed the guide, and they provided instructions on when and where to meet up for departure.

What Could Be Improved

Even though Viking is a smaller ship, the sudden influx of so many tour groups can make some museums and cultural experiences feel congested. (Photo credit: Jeffrey Guard)

Crowds Created by Viking Groups

Although Viking ships are smaller, there were still multiple tour groups arriving at the same site simultaneously. This sometimes led to bottlenecks, making it hard to get a clear view of key exhibits or landmarks.

💡 Suggested Improvement: Stagger tour group arrivals to avoid congestion at popular sites.

Language Barriers with Some Guides

While most guides were knowledgeable and passionate, some were not as fluent in English. At times, their explanations were difficult to decipher, and by the time I figured out what they meant, the group had already moved on.

  • Since the tours are on a schedule, there wasn’t always time for clarifications or extra questions.
  • Other Viking groups waiting behind us meant we had to keep moving through exhibits.

💡 Suggested Improvement: Viking could provide brief written summaries or headsets with pre-recorded commentary for better clarity.

Restricted Port Access & Delayed Shuttle Timing

The port in Crete required all guests to take a Viking shuttle bus in and out of the port, with no option to walk or take a taxi. While this was understandable for logistical reasons, the first shuttle didn’t leave until 9 AM, which delayed our plans by an hour—a big deal when trying to maximize time in port.

💡 Suggested Improvement: Offer earlier shuttle departures for passengers who want a head start on exploring.

Guest Services: Helpful—When They Want to Be

What We Appreciated

One positive aspect of Viking’s Guest Services was their 24/7 availability. No matter what time of day (or night), there was always someone at the desk ready to assist.

I tested this firsthand when I went out at 2:00 AM to film the ship’s public spaces—and sure enough, there was a guest services agent on duty.

When they wanted to be helpful, they truly were. A great example was when they clarified the passport collection process after embarkation, ensuring we knew exactly when and where to retrieve them.

Where Viking Guest Services Fell Short

If I had to name one major area where Viking disappointed me, it would be Guest Services. While I understand that their job can be stressful, there were two key incidents where their attitude was dismissive and unhelpful:

1. Recovering My Scissors from Port Security

When my scissors were confiscated at port security in Greece, I turned to Guest Services for assistance in retrieving them. Instead of helping, they made it clear they didn’t want to be bothered with the issue.

2. The Dinner Reservation Glitch

After Viking’s system lost our confirmed dinner reservations, we called Guest Services for help. Their response? A clear lack of interest. Rather than offering solutions, their attitude suggested we were inconveniencing them.

Announcements: A Mixed Bag of Essential Info & Missed Messages

What We Loved

Viking Daily: The Ultimate Cruise Guide

Everything you needed to know for the day was outlined in the Viking Daily, which served as a cruise bible filled with:
Important schedules & activity highlights
Port details & excursion information
Dining options & entertainment updates

The best part? It was delivered the evening before, giving passengers plenty of time to plan the next day.

Port Talks & Intercom Announcements

For those who wanted even more details, Viking offered:

  • Port Talks with the Cruise Director, providing insights about upcoming destinations.
  • Shipwide intercom announcements, keeping passengers informed.

❌ What Could Be Improved

Viking Daily Requires Careful Reading

While the Viking Daily is packed with great information, key details can be easy to overlook. You really have to read it carefully to ensure nothing important is missed.

💡 Suggested Improvement: Include a “Here’s What You Need to Know” executive summary at the top, highlighting critical information at a glance.

Port Talks: Too Much Fluff, Not Enough Focus

As mentioned earlier, the Port Talks often included too much casual conversation and not enough focused insights.

💡 Suggested Improvement:

  • Start with a bullet-point summary of key takeaways.
  • Allow passengers to skip to in-depth details if they want more.

Intercom Announcements Were Inconsistent

A frustrating issue was that some announcements played inside staterooms, while others were only broadcast in hallways. Since the cabins are nearly soundproof, we missed important information on multiple occasions.

💡 Suggested Improvement: Ensure ALL key announcements are audible in staterooms, with an option to disable them for those who prefer quiet.

The Other Passengers: A Sophisticated & Serene Crowd

What We Loved

An Adult-Only Experience

Let’s be honest—no kids, no large family groups, and no chaotic crowds made the cruise undeniably peaceful. The atmosphere was calm, mature, and sophisticated, allowing for a truly relaxing experience.

An Educated & Well-Dressed Crowd

Viking naturally attracts a well-traveled, well-educated demographic, and it showed. We met retired teachers, doctors, and business executives, leading to elevated conversations and engaging discussions.

Another thing I appreciated? People dressed well. If you know me, you know I hate going to upscale places only to find them overrun by poorly dressed slobs. That wasn’t the case on Viking. In fact, most guests were so well-dressed that the rare casually dressed guest actually stood out.

A Tranquil Cruise Culture

With no loud parties, no over-the-top entertainment, and a focus on enrichment and relaxation, the entire experience felt serene and refined—exactly what we were looking for.

❌ What We Didn’t Like

A Few Guests with a Sense of Entitlement

While most passengers were courteous and respectful, there were a few exceptions:

  1. Late Arrivals to Tour Buses
    • Some guests showed up 20 minutes late, holding up entire excursions for everyone else, or didn’t come with their vox-boxes (the audio equipment needed for the excursions)
  2. Ignoring Physical Requirements for Tours 🚶‍♂️
    • Despite clear warnings in Viking’s literature, some passengers complained about walking distances during excursions.
    • Thankfully, other passengers quickly called them out, reminding them that the requirements were clearly stated beforehand.

Final Thoughts: Viking Delivers Exactly What It Promises

✅ What We Loved

Viking Delivers on Its Promises

One of the most impressive aspects of this cruise was how closely the actual experience matched Viking’s advertisements. In the travel industry, it’s common to see gradual declines in quality as companies try to maximize profits before doing a refresh. Not Viking.

Despite not being a brand-new ship, the Viking Star felt nearly pristine—a testament to their commitment to maintenance and quality.

Unmatched Convenience & Stress-Free Travel

When I look back at all the ports we visited and their cultural significance, I realize just how incredible this package was.

Sure, I could have planned this itinerary myself, flying or ferrying from port to port. But let’s be honest—that would have been:
❌ A logistical nightmare of constantly packing, unpacking, and lugging suitcases
❌ A scheduling headache, coordinating flights, ferries, and transportation
❌ A bureaucratic challenge, especially with border crossings and paperwork (particularly between Greece & Turkey)

At some places in Turkey, we were required to carry special passes. Given the bureaucratic hurdles, I was grateful that Viking took care of that for all passengers.

Viking handled it all seamlessly. They took care of:
All transportation & lodging
Immigration paperwork & border crossings (especially helpful in Turkey)
Curated excursions & expert guides

Having our floating hotel follow us from city to city allowed us to fully maximize each day without the stress of travel logistics.

Would I Recommend the Viking Star: Ancient Mediterranean Treasures?

Absolutely—without hesitation.

This cruise is a fantastic way to experience multiple historically rich destinations that would otherwise be challenging to navigate on your own. Viking excels at combining seamless travel logistics with a luxurious and stress-free experience.

Final Rating: A- ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

What Stood Out:

  • The incredible itinerary—visiting world-class destinations with ease
  • The exceptional onboard experience—luxurious, comfortable, and well-designed

What Could Be Improved:

  • Housekeeping storing carts in front of our room
  • Guest Services’ lack of responsiveness during key moments

💰 Was it worth every penny? Absolutely. Despite a couple of minor issues, Viking delivered an outstanding experience, and I wouldn’t hesitate to sail with them again. ⏹️
